A CALL TO PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN DISCERNMENT AND CHOICE:

LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS 18 MAY 2011

 “I have come that you may have life and have it in abundance” (John 10:10)

 The South African Council of Churches calls on all who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour to use the next days in deep and prayerful discernment for the political choices they will make on 18th May. As we call to mind the immediate past liturgical seasons – Lent, Holy Week, The Death and Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus – we also recall Jesus’ own retreats into silence and dialogue in order to clarify his life choices for the world. If it was necessary for our Lord Jesus, to set aside time and space for choices in his life – indeed time in which he could proclaim that those who chose to follow him should choose “life in abundance” - how much more should we not do the same?

On 18 May 2011 South Africa will conduct its third Local Government Elections since 2000. The SACC believes that Christian citizens should make special time for thought, reflection and discernment on their political choices during this critical moment in our history. Our call is, therefore, for all Christian citizens to find some time and space over the remaining days to do soul searching and prayerful discernment of the political choices we have made and will make. We recommend that in your prayers and discernment, all Christians hold in mind one or more of these issues so important building up social cohesion and a positive national identity:

  • Strengthening democratic gains made over the past 17 years;
  • Promotion of human security - such as access to basic services - as means toward just and peaceful society;
  • Securing economic justice in order to eradicate poverty and inequality;
  • Advancing a culture of moral and spiritual transformation based on care and dignity rather than a culture of “me first”, greed and corruption.

God bless

The Revd. Mautji Pataki,

General Secretary, South African Council of Churches
